Starting over is never easy, but it’s a part of life that nearly everyone must go through. When you move, it can often feel like you’re starting from scratch, making it feel like everything before has been thrown into the scrap pile, but that isn’t the case! Using your previous experiences, you can make your new house feel like home in no time!

Cover All Your Bases

To start, you’ll need to get all of the boring stuff out of the way; that means changing your address at the post office and transferring your utilities—like electricity and water. These things are not necessarily fun, but they are some of the most tasks to keep your house up and running (literally) and to make sure you are receiving your mail. Getting this done before you actually move into the house will make the transition much less stressful because it will be one less thing you have to worry about.

Feel Secure

A new home may feel a little strange at first and you probably won’t feel comfortable right away. To ease your imagination, make sure that your home is secure. If you hadn’t thought of it yet, there could be several people who still have spare keys to the front door (neighbors who have been living there for years, babysitters, dog walkers, etc). We strongly advise that, once you move in, you call a locksmith to change all of the locks of your home and install a security system. Once you feel safe, you will feel much more at ease and settled in.

Familiarize Yourself

In addition to safety, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with your home. For example, you’re going to want to check all of the smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, find out where the circuit breaker is and label each switch to its connected area, and so on. Doing this will help you relax in the case of an emergency, power outage, and to expect the unexpected. You should consider getting comfortable in your new neighborhood quickly. There are few things worse than getting in the car and feeling lost in your own hometown… but taking a nice walk with your dog or going out and meeting your new neighbors can help ease that anxiety.

Turn Your House Into A Home

Here’s where the fun really begins! When it comes to settling into a new home, nothing will make you feel as at home as making the place your own. That means putting up décor that you love, putting your favorite sheets on your bed, organizing the kitchen in a way that’s more familiar to you, and anything else that allows you to add your own touch to your home. A house just needs a little bit of that loving feeling to really turn into a comfortable, family friendly, home that you can thrive in. Do whatever you need to to get to that point!
