Whether you’re going to college, moving in with your loved one, or finally getting out of your parents’ house after years of saving, moving can mean a new beginning for you. Regardless of the reason, it is a great feeling that can quickly turn into desperation when faced with all the packing. Let’s be honest – we don’t need all the stuff we have in our houses right now. So, how about decluttering your house before moving to a new home?

Ready to start?

Start Easy and Small

The organization expert, Marie Kondo, says that we need to start decluttering through categories, not location. For example, start with your clothes (small items): get them all, from your closet, laundry, extra rooms, and put them all together in the same place. Declutter away!

Get Your Supplies Ready

Make sure you have boxes, tape, and a pen or marker. Divide the boxes into categories: donate, trash, recycling, sell, etc., then label the boxes clearly for movers. Make sure you make a note of fragile items by labeling the outside of their box!

Furniture and Food Included

When thinking of decluttering, we usually think of clothes and shoes; but since we are talking about moving, we have to include everything – even big things like furniture, and small things like canned goods and food taking up space in your fridge.

Ask Yourself: Does This Item Makes Me Happy?

Again in the words of the organization expert Marie Kondo, this is the only question to ask when deciding if an item should stay or go. If the item gives you joy, keep it. If it doesn’t, toss it away. That question can be applied to all items: does your saucepan gives you happiness? You may not think it does, but if it is always there, available for your cooking successes and fails, it does. If you’re ever stuck on the fence with an item, just remember: when in doubt, throw it out!

Get Help and Get Going!

Order a pizza, recruit some friends, and make packing into an event! In addition to providing good company, they can help you make decisions about emotional items you may not know what to do with –  and as an added incentive, they may even get some of your things for themselves if you decide it’s a “no” and not a “go”.
