Looking for Money Saving Moving Tips?
Moving is one of the most stressful experiences in life, draining energy and time for our already busy schedules. Worse, it can siphon money from our wallets just as fast.
The good news is that there are a few simple steps you can take to cut costs and save money when moving. As you prepare for your move, try these three DIY money saving moving tips to make moving day a success.
1. Find Your Own Boxes
Those square cardboard things? Yeah, they can get expensive fast if you buy new ones for your move. Instead of buying new ones, opt for used boxes.
Boxes aren’t luxury items, and used boxes are usually just as sturdy as new ones. Two good websites that sell used boxes are Container Exchange and Box Cycle, but Craigslist also often has people selling used boxes in your area.
Using old items for moving instead of buying new ones is a good tip for more than just boxes. Instead of bubble wrap or packing peanuts, use newspapers, blankets, or even coffee filters.
2. Move in the Middle of the Week
Studies show that the most popular time to move is during the weekend. It makes sense in terms of convenience, but if you can wait until the middle of the week, there’s less demand for their services and most moving companies will give you cheaper rates.
Even if you’re not using a moving company, gas is cheapest on Tuesday, and so especially if you’re moving long distance, it behooves you to move earlier in the week instead of earlier.
For the same reason as the above, the peak moving season is summer, so planning for a winter move can save you money.
3. Hire a Moving Company
This one seems counterintuitive, but hear it out. For almost any kind of move you’re going to have to rent a moving truck, and those are expensive. The longer you have them, the faster and higher the charge, and their gas mileage is poor at best.
Even after begging friends and family into helping you move, or conversely bribing them with pizza, a move can take more than a day or two. A professional moving company can do the same amount of work in half the time. Get estimates from local moving companies and weigh which one makes more sense for your needs.
Moving on a Budget
If you follow these three money saving moving tips, you should be able to cut down how much money disappears from your pocket when transitioning from one home to the next.
