Pet movesMoving from one home to another can be an exhausting process. It can even be more of a challenge when a family pet is in the picture.

Here at E-Z Move, we strive to make the packing and moving process as painless for you as possible. But what can you do for your dog to ensure a stress-free move?

Here are some helpful tips you can use to help ease the stress of moving with pets and keep your dog happy every step of the way.

Train Your Dog to Love the Car

While we long ago wrapped our heads around the idea of sitting inside a speeding box, a dog still finds it a strange and fearful experience. When it comes to travelling long distance with dogs, it pays to prepared.

As you plan your upcoming move, it’s well worth your time to train your dog to become comfortable with traveling by car.

This kind of training is easy and simple to do. Begin by bringing your dog into a stationary car. Take with you their favorite blanket or toy and spend some time inside with them. When they become comfortable inside the stationary car, take them for a quick drive around the block.

Take progressively longer trips each time. These trips are an ideal time to practice the other tips in this post.

Bring Cleaning Products

You may not have the time (or energy) before moving to train your dog to be car friendly.

When stressed, dogs become prone to accidents. Some also suffer from motion sickness. When moving with a dog, it never hurts to carry cleaning products with you. Disinfecting wipes, paper towels, and trash bags are all useful items to have with you.

To minimize the chance of an accident, refrain from feeding your dog for 2-4 hours before leaving. Place a towel or sheet on the seat where the dog is seated, and if in a carrier or crate layer the bottom of it as well.

Plan for the Road

A little preparation can go a long way, especially when traveling with your dog.

Before you leave, be sure to update their ID tags and microchip with your new address and call ahead to any hotels you will have to stay during your trip.

Dogs should not be left to wander around the car when you drive. If you’ll be alone on your drive, seriously consider putting your dog into a carrier, crate, or kennel. If those seem too restrictive, there are also specially made seat belt harnesses for dogs that can be purchased.
