Packing is one of the most important parts of the moving process. Some would say that a smooth house move relies on a proper packing job.

Here are some more common packing blunders that will make your move a lot more stressful than it has to be. If you didn’t see part 1 of this series, check it out here.

Mistake #5: Forget to Pack an “Open First” Box

It’s easy to forget that once you’ve packed your items into a box, those things are rather hard to access.

To avoid falling into this trap, you’ll want to pack a box of essentials. Make this box the one that you open first. Fill it with things like toiletries, kitchen items, bed sheets, and extra clothes. Include some sandwiches and drinks.

Take your “Open First” kit in the car with you. Once you move in, crack it open, and you’ll be good to go.

Mistake #6: “Save Time” by Overfilling Boxes

One of the worst mistakes that you can make is overfilling your boxes. Cardboard has limits, and so does your back. Overpacking a box can lead to injury or worse: broken collectibles. Either way, a shredded box creates nothing but headaches.

Remember to put heavy items in smaller boxes. Save big boxes for lighter things. Take care to keep your boxes at a reasonable weight. Don’t go over 50 pounds for a single container if you can help it. Your back will thank you.

Mistake #7: Leave Empty Space in Moving Boxes

And then there’s the opposite problem, where you don’t fill the box enough. Not only are you wasting valuable space, but the room allows your items to slide around. Fragile items will slide around, increasing the odds that they will break.

Use padding or bubble wrap to keep your fragile items from moving around. Even crumpled newspaper or towels are better than nothing.

Mistake #8: Cheap out on Packing Supplies

It might be tempting to skimp on buying quality packing supplies. Why bother? You’re just going to toss them out afterward.

You don’t have to go out and buy triple corrugated cardboard. Most grocery stores are more than happy to hand over their empty boxes. You’re doing them a favor by taking it off their hands.

Don’t use boxes that are visibly worn and bent. They can break down under the pressure and weight of the contents. Watching your entire Pop Vinyl collection spill out onto the pavement is a headache that you just don’t need.
